Half Japanese Half Gentlemen Not Beasts

Half Japanese is a rock band formed by brothers Jad and David Fair in their Uniontown, Maryland bedroom around 1975. Their original instrumentation included a small drum set, which they took turns playing; vocals; and an out of tune (but quite distorted) guitar. Both Fair brothers sang, although over time Jad moved into the frontman role.

Jad is well-known for playing an untuned electric guitar. After 30 years, he still does not play in any traditional manner; in the documentary Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King he states that "the only chord I know is the one that connects the guitar to the amp." Their lyrics often deal with monsters and the supernatural (especially as influenced by campy "creature feature" and scifi movies), in addition to more conventional themes, such as young love. They have stated that all their songs are either "love songs or monster songs."

Bruce Kaphan Slider

Kaphan pioneered new territory for the pedal steel in the 90's as a member of alt-rock cult favorites American Music Club, where he quickly liberated the instrument from its Nashville stereotype. Slider is a more extensive rethinking of the pedal steel, with its silvery, liquid tone refracted through Kaphan's personal harmonic vocabulary, skillful arrangements and wide-ranging stylistic compass. His pedal steel work with AMC also led to pedal steel sideman dates on recordings for REM, Jewel, The Black Crowes, Love and Rockets, Chris Isaak, Red House Painters, Jellyfish and others. Career highlights include playing with John Lee Hooker on his Grammy-winning Chill Out. Bruce spent most of '97-'98 on the road playing with former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. Since then he's focused on film scoring and sound design, producing albums for various Bay Area bands and artists, and doing his first solo album.

Throbbing Gristle 20 Jazz Funk Greats

Throbbing Gristle is a British industrial music and visual arts group that evolved from the performance art group COUM Transmissions. The band consists of Genesis P-Orridge (bass, violin, vocals, vibraphone), Cosey Fanni Tutti (guitars, cornet, vocals), Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson (tapes, found sounds, horns, vibraphone, synthesizer), and Chris Carter (synthesizers, tapes, electronics).

Throbbing Gristle's confrontational live performances and use of often disturbing imagery, including pornography and photographs of Nazi concentration camps, gave the group a notorious reputation. However the group always maintained that their mission was to challenge and explore the darker and obsessive sides of the human condition rather than to make attractive music. Throbbing Gristle pioneered the use of pre-recorded tape-based 'samples', and made extensive use of special effects to produce a distinctive, highly distorted background, usually accompanied by lyrics or spoken-word performances by Cosey Fanni Tutti or Genesis P-Orridge. Though they asserted they wanted to provoke their audience into thinking for themselves rather than pushing any specific agenda (as evidenced by the song "Don't Do As You're Told, Do As You Think" on Heathen Earth), Throbbing Gristle also frequently associated with the anarchist punk scene. They even appeared on the infamous Crass pamphlet Toxic Grafity, with a condensation of their own propaganda parody series, Industrial News. In 1977 they released their debut single United/Zyklon B Zombie, followed by an album, Second Annual Report. Although pressed in a limited initial run of 786 copies on the band's own Industrial Records label, it was later re-released due to high demand on Mute records, however this later release was reversed with all tracks playing backwards and in reverse order. This was followed by a series of albums, singles and live performances over a four year period.
20 Jazz Funk Greats is the third full-length album by Throbbing Gristle.

Dave Douglas Convergence

Dave Douglas (born March 24, 1963) is a U.S. jazztrumpeter and composer whose music is notable for drawing on many non-jazz musical styles, including classical music, European folk music and klezmer. He has been a member of the experimental big band Orange Then Blue. Douglas is currently the director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, which is held annually in New York City. Since 1993, Douglas has recorded more than twenty albums as a bandleader. He has also performed and recorded with dozens of musicians, perhaps most notably with various John Zorn ensembles. With his own groups, Douglas has pioneered new settings for the trumpet in jazz and expanded concepts of what the music (and music in general) can be. In more recent years he has explored collaborations involving modern dance, spoken word/poetry, and film.
