In 2002 Akis Boyatzis (founder of Sigmatropic) released an album that put music to the Haiku poetry of Nobel Prize winning Greek laureate George Seferis. Now he is taking this work to an international audience by re-releasing Sixteen Haiku & Other Stories with newly recorded English vocals supplied by a collection of renowned alternative artists. Amongst the talent roster are Robert Wyatt, Lee Ranaldo, Howe Gelb and Mark Eitzel.Stylistically the album spans everything from pop, world, ambient, acoustic and rock-lite. It's also littered throughout with unexpected twists that keep the music from being easily classified although the over-riding mood is cinematic, dramatic as well as meditative. Sigmatropic balance a combination of electronic and traditional instruments, beats and rich arrangements that create a surprisingly cohesive landscape despite so many styles being employed.

Slint was a rock band consisting of Brian McMahan (guitar and vocals), David Pajo (guitar), Britt Walford (drums), Todd Brashear (bass on Spiderland) and Ethan Buckler (bass on Tweez). They formed in Louisville, Kentucky, United States in 1986 from the remains of Squirrel Bait. The band disbanded circa 1991, but continued to be an influence on today's post-rock and math rock scene.Considered a seminal work, Spiderland is an album characterized by dark, syncopated rhythms, sparse guitar lines and haunting subject matter. The record's impact was such that some have suggested it is the first true post-rock album, helping to usher in a new wave of bands seeking a move away from the unfettered aggression of hardcore punk but not its underlying ethic.

Spacemen 3 were an English rock band who formed in 1982. "Dreamweapon" is influenced by La Monte Young's concept of "dream Music", evidenced by their inclusion of his notes on the jacket,and includes "An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music",a 45-minute drone piece performed in front of a live audience. They based almost their entire sound on their own concept of minimalism—droning guitars, feedback, as few chords as possible, pounding drums—with their motto “Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to”. Their minimalism bled into their stage show as well. Sitting down to play their guitars and covered in the spinning colours of a cheap psychedelic light show, their stage “act” was very anti-performance. Another striking aspect of Spacemen 3 was their willingness to cover and share their influences. Song titles, lyrics and interviews were peppered with references to bands and artists they believed shared their “minimal is maximal” aesthetic. The Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, the Stooges, the MC5, Captain Beefheart, free jazz musician Sun Ra, the Silver Apples, krautrock bands Kraftwerk and Neu!, 1960s garage punk such as the 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, and the Electric Prunes; the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and other surf bands; 1980s rockabilly groups the Cramps, the Gun Club, Tav Falco; blues and gospel acts like Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, the Staple Singers and John Lee Hooker; and the production techniques of Joe Meek, Brian Wilson and Delia Derbyshire were just some of the names mentioned by the band.

The Pop Group was a post-punk band from Bristol, England whose uncompromising, dissonant sound spanned punk, free jazz, funk and dub reggae.Formed in 1978 by Mark Stewart (lyrics, vocals), John Waddington (guitar), Gareth Sager (guitar), Simon Underwood (bass) and Bruce Smith (drums, percussion), they issued their debut single, "She is Beyond Good and Evil" on Radar Records the following year. Their debut album Y, was produced by reggae veteran Dennis Bovell to critical acclaim but low sales figures.

Locust Abortion Technician is the third full-length studio album by the Butthole Surfers, released in March 1987.
Arguably the Surfers' heaviest album, and without a doubt their darkest and most disturbing, Locust Abortion Technician is also considered by many critics and fans to be one of the band's best, harnessing aspects of punk, heavy metal, and psychedelia into a then-unique sound that could be considered noise rock. With its marriage of punk and metal producing a number of grinding, slower-paced songs, the album might also be seen as an early precursor of grunge.This album was listed in the list 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

'Fold and Rhizomes' (a title inspired by Gilles Deleuze's socio-philosophical work 'Mille Plateaux') is probably the pinnacle of ambient glitch music, before Mille Plateaux (as in the German label) among other caught on and injected a bit of funk into the genre. This compilation is about introversion and isolation - many of the works here are the respective artists at their best. Main and Oval both turn in amazing studies in sound and space, Mouse on Mars bridge the gap between their early rhythm-based output and their later, more experimental work, while Scanner's 'Control' is frankly shit-your-pants spooky. A fascinating document about mid-90s electronica, sounding both human and alien, electronic and organic.

Main, was formed in 1991 by Robert Hampson and Scott Dawson, former members of Loop. They combine ambient sound with layers of electric guitars and dark, foreboding emotional overtones.
After performing in various bands, Robert Hampson's musical career really started in the mid 1980's with the band LOOP. He had previously worked on more experimental musics with his 4 track tape machine, but wanted to try the dynamics of a more traditional guitar based music, loosely influenced by bands such as The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The MC5, but retaining an avant-garde and experimental edge from Can, Faust, Neu!, Rhys Chatham, Glenn Branca and minimalist systems music, to name but a few.
After the end of Loop in 1990, along with Scott Dowson (also of Loop) and with the guitar still as the central sound source, he returned to the more experimental styles of Electroacoustic and Acousmatic musics with the project MAIN.
